Things To Make and Do

January 19, 2004

There's little to report in the news...aside from this weekend seeing all kinds of MLK celebrations. I noticed that Jen had said about the protest when GWB visited Atlanta, but I only found out a few minutes ago why...

I was reading on the BBCi site about Biush railroading Judge Charles Pickering into the appeals circuit.

Now, normally the process is that the President names a nominee, sends it to the Senate who confirm or oppose. If the nominee is confirmed then everything is hunky-dory and the judge goes into a lifetime position in the higher levels of judiciary. If the nominee is opposed then the President will usually go back to the drawing board and find a new nominee.

On Friday, however, Bush took advantage of the Senate being on its winter break to ignore the whole official advisory process to name Judge Charles Pickering to the 5th Circuit of Appeals.

Pickering's skill as jurist, and his knack for fair and balanced sentencing, prompted a letter from notable historians in the South.

And it's not just my adopted Southern friends that are offended. The gay comunity is. And so are the African Americans. And women.

So, he only pisses off the whole of the South, homosexuals, women and black people. I can't imagine why he's the man Bush wants forging the direction of American Justice.

Oh no, wait...I *can*...

Anyhow, I figure that's the reason for the protest at the MLK thing on Friday.
